Quick Facts
What is a Defining Ownership / RACI?
RACI is a responsibility assignment matrix designed to eliminate role ambiguity, navigate organizational politics, and prevent cross-functional dependencies from stalling execution.
When to use it
Use RACI during complex, cross-functional project kickoffs when deliverables are falling through the cracks or overlapping work is occurring. Do not use it for discrete, collaborative decisions (use DACI or RAPID instead).
How to complete the Defining Ownership / RACI
Focus on key deliverables, not administrative tasks. Define roles explicitly before starting. Foster an 'inclusivity' mindset rather than top-down assignment. Crucially, ensure there is exactly one 'A' (Accountable) for every deliverable to prevent bottlenecks.
Why use an interactive Defining Ownership / RACI template?
RACI often devolves into 'Alphabet Soup' spreadsheets. Methodiq's AI 'Synthesizer' drafts proposals based on history, and the 'Challenger' spots missing 'Accountables' or overloaded individuals, neutralising the blame game.

Guiding Questions
Responsible (R)
- Who is the 'Doer' actually rolling up their sleeves to complete this?
- Is this person overloaded with too many 'R' assignments across the board?
Accountable (A)
- Who is the single 'Owner' where the buck stops?
- Is there exactly one 'A' assigned to prevent a bottleneck or diffusion of responsibility?
Consulted (C)
- If we don't consult this Subject Matter Expert, what specific risk are we taking on?
- Is communication truly two-way before work is finalized?
Informed (I)
- Are we informing this spectator because they need to act on the information, or just to make them feel important?
- How will they be notified after the fact?

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing 'Responsible' (doing the work) with 'Accountable' (owning the result).
The 'Alphabet Soup' syndrome: building massive, unreadable matrices that cause fatigue and disengagement.
Accountability Overload: having multiple 'Accountable' people for a single deliverable.
The Command-and-Control Bias: treating the matrix as a rigid contract instead of a flexible collaboration tool.
